As part of the exhibition “The Koran, European stories (12th- 21st centuries)”, the Festival des 3 Continents and the Médiathèque Jacques Demy are joining forces to offer a screening of Youssef Chahine’s film Le destin.
Le destin, Youssef Chahine – Fiction – France/Egypt – 2h15 – 1997
In 12th-century Muslim Andalusia, the Caliph Al-Mansour orders the auto-da-fé of the works of the philosopher Averroès, whose precepts upset the religious fundamentalists. Threatened, Averroès and his followers decided to produce copies to ensure their survival and transmission beyond their borders.
Youssef Chahine, an Egyptian filmmaker at the crossroads of Arab and Western cultures, pays tribute to the philosopher whose texts influenced human thought from the Age of Enlightenment to the present day.
The session will be introduced and followed by a discussion between Jérôme Baron, Artistic Director of the Festival des 3 Continents, and John Tolan, Professor Emeritus of History at Nantes University and curator of the exhibition “The Koran, European Histories (12th – 21st centuries)”.
