An actress of international renown and the emblematic face of both the new Indian cinema, known as ‘parallel cinema’, and a host of major commercial successes, Shabana Azmi is a huge star who bridges several worlds. Her exceptional filmography offers a glimpse of Indian cinema at its best.
Since her first role at the age of 23 in Shyam Benegal’s Ankur, she has won a record five national awards for best actress in India. But her formidable fame has never distanced her from the social and political realities of her country. A United Nations ambassador, she was also the first Indian to be awarded the Gandhi International Peace Prize for her commitment, in particular, to defending women’s rights.
