Among our 2024 guests, we are lucky enough to welcome actor and director John Chiang (alias David Chiang) from 15 to 18 November to present the work of his brother, Derek Yee.
The elder brother of Derek Yee, John Chiang (alias David Chiang) is one of the key figures in the martial arts cinema of the legendary Shaw Brothers. Spotted by Chang Cheh, a multi-award-winning actor in over 150 films and TV series, his face is forever associated with this golden age, but he also lived through the next era of action films (Ringo Lam, Tsui Hark, Johnnie To…). He himself directed some fifteen films, including The Legend of the Owl (1981) from a screenplay by his brother Derek Yee. John Chiang has collaborated with Derek Yee on several occasions. The two brothers co-starred in Chor Yuen’s Death Duel (1977). John Chiang also stars in films produced by his brother, including Lawrence Kwan’s recent In Broad Daylight (2023), in which he plays one of the lead roles.
We are also delighted to welcome Clarence Tsui, co-programmer, journalist and critic based in Hong Kong, to accompany this retrospective devoted to Derek Yee.
