Inspired by Herman Koch’s novel The Dinner, the irony of A Normal Family (the title sets the tone) tastes like a succession of family get togethers to which two brothers and their respective wives would have preferred to not be invited. In a diplomatic back-and-forth, feigning to be a thriller, their morality is tested when their model children are implicated in a sordid criminal case. The satire turns into a killing game, opposing two brothers and their couples grappling with the reality of their parental failings. The picture’s ample format destroys any separating line between good and bad moral choices and this family hotpot questions an entire society about the integrity of its values. JB
