Thiruchelvan, an engineer and writer, lives with his wife Indra, a television newscaster, and their three children. When the ninth birthday of the eldest child, Amudha, arrives, the parents tell her that she is adopted and that her real mother lives in Sri Lanka. Amudha wants to find her birth parents and persuades her parents to help her. The family sets off to Sri Lanka, where war awaits them.
