A year before, Ho Jun left Beijing for Tokyo with high hopes. He enrolled in a Japanese language school, but the high cost of living forces him to take on a part-time job at an abattoir. Even though his job is better paying than most others available to foreign students in Tokyo, his life is grim. With hopes of earning extra cash, Ho Jun and his friends fréquent the local pachinko pin-ball parlour. There his life seems to take a better turn as he meets pretty Ailin, a Japan-born Chinese girl. Their innocent romance is short-lived as Ho jun’s cheating at the pin-ball parlour is revealed and puts him in debts with Endo, the gangster parlour owner. Even selling himself for sex, he is still unable to produce the money. Endo offers to forget the debt if the Chinaman hands Ailin over to him. Ho Jun does, but on condition that Endo gives him tips on which machines at his parlour will pay off…
