The aging employee of an insurance company is nicknamed by his five children “Romantic Papa” – a character played by Kim Seung-ho. He leads a simple and happy existence until the day he loses his job. Until then, his modest income had enabled him to assure a decent life for his now teenage children, four of whom are still students. Not wanting to lose face, the old man maintains his usual good-natured and joyful attitude and hides his real situation from his family. In this adaptation of a theatre play, Shin Sang-ok, rather than downplay the theatricality of the material and situations, finds on the contrary a support giving him multiple means of extirpating his film from the anticipated melodramatic conventions.
