The 1920s. Adada, a docile pretty young woman, is a somewhat unpredictable deaf-mute. Her love for her childhood friend Soo-ryong has steadily grown, but her mother decides to marry her off to Young-hwan, the descendant of a noble but impoverished family from a neighbouring village, who receives a valuable plot of land as a dowry. For a while, the couple and family live in harmony. Young-hwan soon forgets poverty and lets himself be seduced by more frivolous superficial pleasures. He leaves home with some of their savings only to return years later in the company of another woman. Humiliated, Adada is tortured by this new situation.
