Müslim, in love with Gülbahar but rejected by her parents for being too poor, runs off with her to marry in a neighboring village, where they struggle to make ends meet. When their son is born, Gülbahar’s widowed father relents and offers to take them in. Gülbahar’s father continues to disapprove of Müslim, who returns to work as a cotton picker. At the plantation, he is falsely accused of theft and swears to sacrifice his next son if he is found innocent. Released and back in the village, Müslim’s wife gives birth to another son. His eldest son falls ill and poverty deepens. Müslim, influenced by the biblical sacrifice of Abraham and feeling responsible for his village’s misfortunes, sacrifices his two-and-a-half-month-old son.
