Before the apartheid years, Jim lived in the South African countryside. He leaves for Johannesburg to look for work. Once there, he is beaten up by a gang of thugs, who leave him for dead. A kind night watchman finds him, takes care of him and gets him a job as a waiter in the nightclub where his daughter Dolly sings. One day, while Dolly is rehearsing, Jim starts to sing with her. The group’s leader likes his voice and proposes that he join them.
