Aman leads a quiet, average life in Aul Aksuat, a village in eastern Kazakhstan. His serene lifestyle cornes to an abrupt end, however, when his younger brother Kanat turns up from the city on the run from his debtors, bringing his pregnant girlfriend, Zhanna with him. Soon the villagers believe Aman to have taken Zhanna for his mistress – in flagrant disregard of age-old traditions and values strictly administered by the village elders. Aman is thrown into a quandary, he is at odds not only with his familiar surroundings but also with himself…
