Twenty years after Lino Brocka’s Manila in the Claws of Light, two characters also named Julio and Ligaya try their luck in auditions for a popular programme promoted by the newly created Ministry of Entertainment. The declared objective is to raise the moral conscience of the masses. As for De Leon, he takes advantage of this short yet nightmarish fable to filter through that fact that fascism had well and truly survived the departure of the Marcos. JB
