“Raise up your head”, Bawa asks Bambino, who strikes a pose: through the lens, a studio photographer and a delivery driver meet and together roam the streets of Lagos. Shy and precise gestures, backward and forward steps delicately sketch out how these two men become closer in a country where, like many others in Africa, homosexuality is prohibited by law and those who love each other are publicly condemned. All the Colours of the World are Between Black and White is not only the story of budding love. It is foremost a story of emancipation for Bambino, long-resigned to celibacy, precarity and solitude. Babatunde Apalowo lends its whole scope to this absolute event that is an encounter, as much as he creates an elegy of courage. AR
