Amar, Akbar and Anthony were separated from their family at a very young age, then raised separately in different faiths. Amar (Vinod Khanna) grows up in the Hindu tradition and becomes a police officer, Akbar (Rishi Kapoor) lives in a Muslim family and becomes a qawaali singer, while Anthony (Amitabh Bachchan) becomes Christian and a small-time crook. The film was one of the greatest hits of its time and led to remakes in Tamil, Teluugu and Malayalam. Its seductive vision of a nation united over and above cultural differences and social conditions resonates like a salutary anomaly in the today’s highly polarised climate on the question of religion.
