Nourishing Embassies is much more than a Parisian atlas of world cuisine, much more than a stroll among the restaurants and stalls where a diplomacy of taste and culinary tradition is practised. The film belongs to a series named Regard sur la France (A Look at France) but here France is just a refuge from which Safi Faye summons the whole world and its stories. Gastronomy leads to the great diasporas and the great disorders of the century, and its archive images and sometimes deeply moving first hand accounts bring back memories of the Lebanese war, of the Spanish exile, of the Iranian revolution, Auschwitz and the Latin American dictatorships. A terrific little lesson in history and geography. AR
