Andalucia – a syncopated portrait of Yacine, interpreted by Samir Guesmi as a will-o’-the-wisp character – refuses, like its hero, to be ensnared by any overburdensome realities. Yet a priori everything conspires against it, as the young man from a high-rise estate navigates by sight, switching between odd jobs as an educator, reminders of his past and a new job with the homeless, where he mingles with the neighbourhood’s crackpots. Alain Gomis has made an unparalleled film, elusive as well as explosive and scathing, attentive to all its faces, starting with the face of his lead actor to whom he offers, in a magical finale, an unexpected genealogy that pierces the film with its historic depths. Here, lightness gives rise to thought and liberates fixed representations. FM
