“This is the heart of the Earth. We’re fighting for the heart of the Earth, this territory. We’re not only fighting for this place; we’re fighting for all territories belonging to the heart of the Earth. That’s where we belong. We, the Avá, are the descendants of the heart of the Earth.” Ava Yvy Vera relates the re-occupation of the land by its Kaiowa inhabitants, in the region of Mato Grosso do Sul near the Paraguayan border. In chapter form, the story is passed from hand to hand, from speaker to speaker, and the collective of indigenous filmmakers incorporates cinema into the very heart of its resistance. MM
