Avril
(Aprili)

by Otar IOSSELIANI

April (1961)

A beautiful tree offers lovers a shelter. It is cut down to make furniture. In Tbilisi, a young couple go on a shopping spree to buy furniture, which they arrange and clean. They are happy until the day they end up quarrelling because the furniture takes up too much room.

On completing his training at the famous VGIK film school, Otar Iosseliani shoots Aprili as his end-of-studies film – banned in the Soviet Union. The film is perfectly constructed and already reveals the poetic – and political – strength of the Georgian master’s mise en scène.
