A globalised Istanbul: buildings still under construction and endless cranes. This is the new skyline of a city whose personality is vanishing under concrete. Fifty-three-year-old Ibrahim learns that he has terminal cancer. He is a construction worker building a luxury apartment block which he could never afford to live in. His young nephew, Yusuf, also works there. Flattered by his boss, Resul, who is just a few years his senior, Yusuf harbours ambitious, even covetous dreams. With this building, powerful both visually and symbolically, and these two men, the film paints the portrait of an epoch and questions a country torn between several futures. Exploring the country’s economy, social issues, love relationships and generational values, this mature debut film takes a calm and lucid look at the Turkey of today. MFM
