In a fishing village on the Bahia coast, the pai do santo (an authority in African rituals) maintains the population in a superstitious state. Young Aruan, chosen by Yemanjá (a sea divinity) can not have sexual intercourse. Firmino, a black man back from the city, rebels against the exploitation of his comrades. He decides to prove that Aruan is just like other human beings and gets a prostitute to help him. She seduces Aruan. After he has made love, he loses his powers and brings bad luck upon his family. Aruan leaves for the city, while the prostitute kills herself.
