A young man resigns from his job and breaks up with his girlfriend to pursue his true nature and the dream of shaping the world to his own desires. Against all odds, he manages to make his idea for a business come true – the setting-up of an airline company.
Adapted from a novel by Yasushi Inoue, Between Yesterday and Tomorrow was a huge box-office success in Japan. If the title resounds with an irony that would probably not have displeased the filmmaker, this is because it is the last film Kawashima directed at Shochiku before he left to join Nikkatsu. Here, he found again Imamura, who was to become his first assistant and scriptwriter on a few films. JB
