As an inquiry-film of a particular genre, and also the diary of a personal quest for justice and reconstruction, Black Box Diaries is as much an intervention documentary as a film of survival, which makes it twice as necessary: writing, filming to bring the criminal reality of the facts to light and fighting against an ever-threatening collapse. The journalist Shiori Ito investigates her rape by Noriyuki Hamaguchi, a powerful man close to Prime Minister Premier Shinzo Abe, and strives to bring the perpetrator to justice. Despite the attempts to play down or stifle it, the affair is nonetheless revealing – even on the benches of the Assembly – of a locked-in and outdated judicial system and patriarchal society. FM
