For his first feature-length fiction film, Weerasethakul was inspired by a summer romance between a Burmese immigrant and a young Thai woman working in a ceramic figurine factory. Min, denied a work certificate by a woman doctor because he has no ID papers, is the one who leads us into the idyllic depths of a forest bordering the two countries. A dazzling, sensory getaway that seems to liberate him as well as his girlfriend Roong from the pressure (and oppression) of the working world. Under the effect of the natural landscape, caresses and home-made ointments, the young man’s sick and clandestine body breaks its silence and finally seems to come alive. AR
