The passage from adolescence to adulthood for three friends raised in the South Central ghetto in Los Angeles : Tre, a brilliant student expelled from his school for having set off a fight ; Ricky, an athlete looking for a scholarship to a leading university ; and his half-brother Doughboy, steeped in alcoholism and delinquency. Inspired by the experience of its director, this debut film from John Singleton denounces head-on the violence of Californian ghettos, and the hold that gangs have over the life of young people in deprived neighbourhoods.
