Embers extinguished
(Braza dormida)

by Humberto MAURO

The film follows the adventures of Luiz Soares, who studies in Rio at his father’s request. He spends all his money and drops out of school. He gets a job managing a factory in the countryside and falls in love with the owner’s daughter. Jealous, the ex-manager writes anonymous letters to the factory owner denouncing the affair. Opposed to the marriage, the father sends his daughter away, but during a party the ex-manager throws a bomb into the factory. When Luiz returns, he fights with the ex-manager, who falls into a boiler and dies. The owner finally allows his daughter to marry Luiz.

“This is a cinema of mise-en-scène: the editing is not tyrannical, but it is the filmmaker’s vision that, faced with each dramatic phase pushes him to this or that choice of camera, the editing thus following an inner rhythm… Guided by intuition, Mauro is a dissonant; the root of his editing is life.” Glauber Rocha
