After having fought to liberate South-Vietnam, Hien returns to Hanoi where he moves in with his older brother and sister-in-law. Thought to be dead for a time, unemployed, he feels like an intruder in his own family. For the acuteness of his gaze on a generation that carried the stigmata of war and their difficulty to build a life in times of peace, Brothers is at once an essential film from Dôi Moi’s debut but also the most remarkable reverse angle given to the image of the veteran by Vietnamese cinema.
