In 1926, playwright Matsuzaki meets a mysterious beautiful woman named Shinako, but he is stuck with fear that Shinako may be the wife of his patron Tamawaki. A few days later, Matsuzaki meets Ine who somehow ressembles Shinako. Ine introduces herself as the wife of Tamawaki, but he knows that Ine actually died a few years ago. In fact, Shinako is the second wife of Tamawaki.
Matsuzaki accepts a secret rendez-vous with Shinako in Kanazawa, but he is surprised to meet his patron in the train. In a little theater, the intricate knot of relationships between Tamawaki, Ine and Shinako, is about to be untied. At that very moment, however, the theater collapses. Matsuzaki, almost insane, returns to Tokyo, where Shinako’s love letter is waiting for him.
