At the Sin Sin Hotel, within whose walls fantasies and confessions are shared, Yonfan’s malicious and benevolent camera weaves its way into the intimacy of a community of transvestite and transgender prostitutes, through the eyes of a young, innocent chamber maid. The film sketches a portrait of the 1960s working-class Bugis Street district, soon after Singapour’s independence, before its capitalist and conservative reputation settled in. Made in 1995, the transgressive charm of Yonfan’s eighth feature film, who came to Nantes in 2019 to present the unforgettable No. 7 Cherry Lane, is glorified by this restored, 4K version which radiates its heady scent.
