1992. Derek Yee creates his company, Film Unlimited Production Co. Ltd., for which he has written the screenplay for a melodrama. The aim is not so much to give in to the appeal of a popular genre but rather to make it more porous to the reality of a city and to the characters of ordinary Hong Kongers, the average men and women. The casting choices are purposeful as they give the three leading roles to actors of no great stature: Lau Ching-wan, Anita Yuen, and Carina Lau, who is the most experienced. This low-budget film is the director’s first big box-office success and sets him ahead of the locomotives of the moment, Jackie Chan in City Hunter and The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk with Jet Li. JB
