The Gamble

As she doesn’t have any money to buy her ill mother medicine, Mai, a student, decides to spend her summer holidays in a remote area where gold-diggers live. She hopes to earn money honestly there. In this hostile place, Mai meets many kind people among the errant characters who live here. She falls in love with Chien, a dealer of “black rice” opium. With Chien, he travels all over the country. In the Cloud Mountains, a gambling session throws Mai and Chien into a pitiful tragedy. They have lost all their money.
