This is a traditional Korean mystery drama based on 18th-century shamanism. In a remote village called Soorigol, run by Master Kang, everything is going well. But his son falls ill and is incurably ill. A young woman exorcist arrives and discovers that the spirit haunting the house is that of the guardian of Pee-Mak, the sacred place, who died 20 years ago. Master Kang reveals that he himself killed Pee-Mak’s guardian, and his confession takes us back 20 years.
A young widow from Master Kang’s family did not respect the tradition that prevents second marriages after widowhood. She had sexual relations with the guardian of the sacred place, Samdol, and they were punished with death by Master Kang’s family, who disguised the girl’s death as a suicide.
