Alice Diop returns to the Bosquets high-rise estate in Clichy-Montfermeil six months after the social riots of 2005. What do the residents have to say about their woes? Housing, career guidance, employment, transport, the daily problems come to life one by one on the images. A resident’s struggle with water infiltration in her building, a young graduate’s attempts to find his first job, or a mayor’s fight to have the enclaved town connected to a tramline are all one and the same. They all meet with the same evasiveness, refusals, apologetic looks or the sincere empathy from overwhelmed officials. A methodical inventory that explores the violence of humiliation and uncovers “the reasons for anger”. FM
