Bakhtygul, a poor and lonesome djigit (knight), chased with his family by bey Salmen, puts himself under the protection of the bey’s enemy, Jarasbai, thus becoming his vassal and slave. On his behalf, he challenges Salmen and steals his horses. But Jarasbai only protects him for a while and does not intervene when Salem has Bakhtygul arrested and judged. Bakhtygul escapes from prison and, free again, waits for his former master at the Karach pass.
