A wailing, tenor sax-heavy soundtrack underpins
sordid melodrama in this landmark Sun Tribe film.
Brothers Natsuhisa and Haruji aimlessly waste away
days basking on beaches and nights drinking in bars,
indolently enjoying Japan’s postwar economic boom.
However tensions arise when Natsuhisa becomes
obsessed with his younger brother’s “pure” girlfriend.
With its impressionistic, innuendo-filled imagery that
pushed the boundaries of Japan’s decency code, it’s a
sui generis vision of youthful transgression.
