We are in 1902, in a family of Gullahs (the descendants of African captives), who are about to leave Sea Islands – located near the South Carolina coast that was formerly a port of arrival for slaving ships – to reach the continent and other ways of life. A contemplative mise-en-scène depicts the oral traditions, clothing, food and spiritual life of this small community preoccupied by their permanency. At the same time, the voice-over of a four-year-old girl « not yet born » weaves the threads interlinking past, present and future: a story of origins which is also that of history and « Afro-American» identity.
