The old paddle steamer, Rocket, sails up and down the Ganges in Bangladesh. It takes a crowd of passengers on board: a young youtuber, students or workers, clerics, a campaigning politician, a fearless child, a group of friends, a handful of tourists… The pleasures and perils of river navigation (pollution, fog, risks of silting) give rhythm the weft of this documentary which in no way obscures the possible metaphoric dimension that these accidents hold for this miniature floating country. Yet, the film avoids any over-emphatic discourse and seems, above all, to follow myriad signs of life as it roams the decks and cabins, painting a collective and contrasted portrait. Announced as the second film of a “water trilogy” following the documentary Are You Listening? (Grand prix of the 2013 Cinéma du Réel festival), Day After… confirms the storytelling talent of Kamar Ahmad Simon. FM
