Dialogues of Exiles
(Diálogos de exiliados)

by Raoul RUIZ

s_725-481dc9

In 1974, one year after the military coup in Chile, Raoul Ruiz went into exile in France and made Dialogue of Exiles one month after his arrival. A quite frank allusion to Bertolt Brecht’s Dialogue of Exiles, the film serves as a text that explores the conditions of exile through the prism of irony and distanciation. Raoul Ruiz invites us to cross the states of exile as a series of misunderstanding, impromptu monologues, unresolved moments and poignant stories that the exiles’ French renders more fragile. Dialogue of Exiles follows members of the Chilean community in Paris in the most trivial and immediate aspects of their daily life. Rebuilding their own singular space, the film unfolds not quite it Chile and not quite in Paris, but in an in-between space invented by cinema. CA & CD
