Dusty and Stones are two country musicians from Eswatini (ex-Swaziland). When invited to record their songs in Nashville, Tennessee, and take part in a festival in Texas, the duo sets out not only on a first voyage far from home but also on a pilgrimage to the birthplace of country music. Reputedly conservative with a tight regional identity, country music is nonetheless the cultural expression of the southern United States, at the crossroads of European, African and Caribbean influences. Recent developments of this music, with the release of Beyoncé’s album, Cowboy Carter, point to the resurgence of a history that is far more diverse than the way it is perceived in Europe. JB
