In the fifteenth century, a blind, young orphan girl, wandering across the steppes of Kazakhstan, meets a young boy a vagabond, who is also an orphan. They continue on their way together.They have various encounters. The young boy kills a man who tries to rape the girl and manages to escape with her. An old, fortune-telling beggar tells the young girl she will stay pure for her whole life. They also meet bandits, an old woman who is half crazy, ans an old witch. The two young people fall in love with each other and the young girl regains her sight. Then they meet a rich, 50 year-old-man, who offers his fortune to the young man in exchange for the girl. The young man refuses at first, then accepts. The day after her wedding, the young orphan girl becomes blind again and throws herself off a cliff.
