I-Sân is a part of the high plateau that stretches across the northeast of Thailand, an extremely poor and arid region. This desert area is home to the province of Kula Rong Haï, “the land of the weeping Kula”. I-San’s son is Bak Khoun, an eight-year-old boy who, in the course of his daily life as a peasant in the ungrateful lands of the northeast, learns how to live, i.e. how to constantly struggle against the aridity of the earth and sky, and the desire to exile himself to more welcoming lands.
