A rich engineer kills his wife on their wedding night when he discovers she was not a virgin. Judged and acquitted, he leaves for the provinces using as an excuse his supervision of the building of a factory. There he meets a joyful and sensual young woman whom he eventually falls in love with; he has to confront her lover. Considered as Mauro’s masterpiece, this film is the climax of the tensions aroused in his mind by the contradictions between mimicry and authenticity, the city and the countryside, tradition and modernity.
