After the revelation of Dev.D (2009) and That Girl in Yellow Boots (2010), Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), Anurag Kashyap’s ninth feature in nine years, was the film that won him international recognition. This saga lasting over five hours (in two parts) recounts the rivalry between two gangster clans struggling for control of a Bengali mining town over three generations. Unabashedly mingling the influences of Scorcese, Coppola and Leone so as to take a greater distance from them, the film also plays with Bollywood conventions in an original way. Love stories, sung sequences and a soap-like chronicle are soon engulfed by the excessive violence that reigns, while its display becomes a source of growing unease. JB
