In a Cambodian mountain village, an American fighter plane crashes but the pilot survives. The Khmer Rouge soldiers order the village children to look after the pilot. Suddenly, the enemy is no longer an abstraction and takes on a concrete form, with a face and voice. For these children, North-American imperialism is no longer just the bombings, but also this black man who tries to communicate, and becomes close to them. In this fiction, Rithy Panh chooses the children’s viewpoint to speak about war and violence in the Cambodia of the 1970s. Using this change of perspective, Panh seeks to question all of the violence that surrounds the children and transforms their lives. JQ
