Raju, a guide in a small town, meets Rosie, a young woman who is unhappily married. She leaves her husband and, despite opposition from Raju’s family, they live together. Raja helps Rosie realise her dream of becoming a dancer, but he starts drinking and the couple break up. In a moment of madness, he forges Rosie’s signature and is sentenced to prison. On his release, while wandering in the countryside, he arrives in a small village where he is mistaken for a holy man. He plays along until the day when, as the drought continues, he is expected to fast in order to make it rain.
