In an unknown time when Japan is tormented by war, Izawa, who works at a broadcasting company, keeps a low-profile while staying at a boarding-house. His neighbours, a prostitute, a pickpocket, a madman, a beggar, a suicidai man have ail lost their sanity through war. Izawa is untouched by the insanity which surrounds him, but he continues to attempt suicide to no avail. A twisted love affair with TV star Ginga drives him away from his work at the broadcasting company. However this in turn increases his desire to make a film. One day, Sayo, the woman next door, sneaks into Izawa’s place to escape from her crazy husband. Both are pure at heart, yet attraction develops into love. But war reaches the extreme and the two, for the first time ever, ironically find a meaning in life while their lives are burning away in flames.
