Hanoi Through Whose Eyes? is a bit like Six in Paris… Made in 1982, released in 1983 and then just as soon removed from the box-office by censorship before being rehabilitated and distributed with much success in 1987, then crowned by a flood of prizes in 1988, il was originally meant to be a commissioned documentary boasting the city’s touristic attractions. But Tran Van Thuy thought more interesting to tell the city from the viewpoints of its intellectuals and artists, musicians, poets, painters. The result implicitly sparks reflection about progress and about the meaning of history. JB
