Ning is a young, bumbling tax inspector. One evening, fleeing from a pack of wolves, he takes refuge in an abandoned temple. There, he meets the lovely and bewitching Hsiao-tsing. But he is unaware that the place is the haunt of demons that Yen, a Taoist priest and master is combatting. A Chinese Ghost Story is not only a tribute to the ghost film genre (inspired, in fact, by Li Han-hsiang’s The Enchanting Shadow) but also one of its finest achievements. Produced by Tsui Hark and directed by Ching Siu-tung, one of Hong Kong’s greatest choreographers (The Killer, Hero, The House of Flying Daggers), this cult film – funny, dark and poetic – harbours multiple registers: the wu xia pan, the love (if not erotic) story and even musical comedy.
