Produced by Derek Yee, directed and co-written by Lawrence Kwan – his second feature film –, In Broad Daylight is reminiscent of The Lunatics and Jennifer Yu’s journalist character reminds us of Deanie Yip’s. An investigation into the abusive treatment of elderly and mentally deficient residents placed in institutions supposed to be giving them adapted care and surroundings, In Broad Daylight contributes to the rare social vein of Hong Kong cinema, as illustrated by some of Ann Hui’s films (A Simple Life and The Way We Are). Based on meticulous investigative work, Lawrence Kwan uses detail to build a realistic point of view and reveal an exploitative system that everyone prefers to ignore. JB
