The visionary producer and filmmaker Yash Chopra could well have contented himself with letting Bachchan’s anger proliferate. But this was not to be. As a film focusing on renunciation or rather on the time, sometimes a life-time, needed to measure its repercussions, Sometimes foils expectations and even wrong-foots them. Revered by Karan Johar – the director of Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Sadness, in which A. Bachchan plays the father Shah Rukh Khan –, Kabhi Kabhie clearly puns on Johar’s Hindi title, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and provides the matrix prototype for all future Bollywood melodramas. JB
