A train leaves the station of a small village in the Kazakh steppe. Kayrat, a boy in his early twenties, has just got on the train and is off to Alma-Ata, determined to carry on studying at the university. But, as he is sitting for the entrance examination, he is expelled from university for lack of discipline. Kayrat stays in Alma-Ata to be trained as a bus driver with the city’s public transport company. One day, Kayrat spots a young girl among the passengers who got on his bus. He likes the girl. Later, he meets her again in a cinema where Werner Herzog’s Woyzeck is showing. The film is a tragic love story. The young girl leaves the theatre before the film is over and Kairat follows her. They get to know each other : she’s called Indira and she is a university student. During the summer holidays, she works as a train carriage conductor. Right now, she is just about to catch her train. Kairat stays in a hostel where he almost has a row with his neighbour Jean. At the same time, Indira allows herself to being seduced by the new dining carwaiter…
